UAE and Russia sign letter of intent on Su-35 fighter jets purchase

The United Arab Emirates and Russia have signed a letter of intent on the purchase of Russian-made Sukhoi Su-35 (NATO reporting name: Flanker-E) fighter jets, CEO of Russia’s state hi-tech corporation Rostec Sergei Chemezov said on Feb. 28, 2017.

"A letter of intent on the purchase of Su-35 planes has been signed," Chemezov said.

The CEO said in late 2015 that Russia and the United Arab Emirates were in talks on the delivery of Su-35 planes.

As Chemezov said at that time, Brazil and Indonesia were interested in the Su-35 fighter jet too.

Rostec Director for International Cooperation and Regional Policy Viktor Kladov said last week that the contract on Su-35 planes was planned to be signed with Indonesia "in the imminent future."

In November 2015, Russia and China signed a contract for the delivery of 24 Su-35 multipurpose fighter jets. The deal is estimated at more than $2 billion.

Under the agreement, Russia will deliver ground-based equipment and backup engines to China as well.
